General Discussion
Has anyone ever smoked their own grains? No one present had.
Del Mar Fair – 850 home brew entries. Mike Mc has entered and a few other members. To be a judge you must be BJCP certified.
How to be BJCP certified? Must pass a test. Some clubs offer classes. No one in Barley Lits is certified.
Ask a Brewer
1. How do you make Hard Lemonade? Jeff L. – Hard to get yeast started, use champagne yeast. Add lemon juice very slowly, takes about 3 hours. For specific instructions email Jeffl@barley.seada.com
2. Flash sparging – how to keep efficiency high? Mike – circulate during mash thru HX and keep temperature constant. His system never puts fire on the mash. Filters automatically.
3. How many brewers add O2? How many olive oil? A few have tried, nothing scientific confirmed.
4. How many filter their brew water? Most do. Mike Mc Does a 50/50 reverse osmosis/carbon filter.

More General Discussion
There is a need for a San Diego Home brewers web site with a calendar that all clubs have access to.
Quaff recently put a Paypal link on their website for memberships. They are getting about 6 new paid members every month. Good money maker, suggested Barley Lits do a Paypal link.
The Octoberfest needs new events. Paul suggested a “blind beer tasting” “best of show” type contest.
National Homebrewers Convention (NHC) San Diego volunteers met last month. They are setting up committees to organize many activities for the event. Mike Mc has the AHA guidelines for these committees. Will feed information to the Barley Lits as it becomes available.
Cheers!
